History of Dunbar Lakes in Schaumburg
Dunbar Lakes is a townhouse and villa subdivision located on the western side of Plum Grove Road, about half a mile south of Higgins Road and north of Schaumburg Road, in Schaumburg. This planned community sits on a 92-acre site and features 1st floor, 2nd floor and 2 story townhomes with 2-3 bedrooms and attached garages.
This was a $61 million development built in the mid-1970s by Dunbar Corporation which was responsible for building Chicago’s first condominium in 1962. The completion of the Dunbar Lakes project provided 1,716 townhomes and villas and was considered at the time to be the firm’s largest suburban development. It also features amenities such as a lake, clubhouse, pool, and tennis court. This development even received the Northern Illinois Gas Company’s Energy Conservation Award for their voluntary use of energy conservation during the construction of their homes.
Dunbar originally proposed the construction of 1,900 units in a planned unit development which included a mixture of townhouses, condominiums and five 16-story buildings. This caused concern over the possible negative effects the high-rise buildings might have on the natural land in the area and community at the time. Due to these types of concerns the plans were modified.
This subdivision was incredibly favorable due to its prime location, home designs and amenities. They even had a sales information center inside of a unique oblong shaped structure that was referred to as the “Space Lab”. Because of its appearance it drew a lot of attention. The “Space Lab” was designed by Larry Klein and Associates. It was created to reflect the open space concept what was featured in the Dunbar Lake homes. In the summer of June of 1975, Dunbar Lakes had a grand opening celebration for their clubhouse. This event included a big picnic lunch, hot air balloon rides, boat races and tennis tournaments. There was even a garden expert on hand to assist the residents with any inquiries they had in regards to their landscaping.
Dunbar Lakes was and continues to be in a prime location. It is only a few minutes away from all that Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates have to offer including the popular Woodfield Mall, Schaumburg Golf Club, Spring Valley Nature Center, and the highly rated Conant High School.
