Barrington Square
Barrington Square is a townhouse community in Hoffman Estates built in the 1970’s by Kaufman and Broad. It is located north of Higgins Road and east of Barrington Road. Kaufman and Broad, a large Real Estate development firm, approached the village board of Hoffman Estates with plans for Barrington Square in 1965. The plans were to build townhouses in what would be Hoffman Estates’s first multi-family development. This community was created to be a fun and functional one. The 2 & 3 story along with the ranch models are very similar to spacious colonials except for their common walls. One of the major attractions of this subdivision include indoor/outdoor recreational facilities and an Olympic size pool.
Barrington Square is conveniently located near the highway, businesses, stores, restaurants, Amita Health St. Alexius Medical Center, Hilldale Golf Club, and the Hoffman Estates Park District which includes the Seascape Family Aquatic Center. It is also not too far from Woodfield Mall, Goebberts Farm and The Arboretum of South Barrington which is an open-air shopping center filled with a mixture of shops, entertainment, and restaurants.

The Highlands
The Highlands subdivision, in Hoffman Estates, is located north of where the intersections of Golf Road and Higgins Road meet and west of Roselle Road. This neighborhood consists of ranch, split level and raised ranch homes.
This subdivision was built in the late 1950s to mid-1960s by F&S Construction Company which later became Hoffman Rosner and then Hoffman Homes. This company was created by Jack Hoffman and his father Sam and their original purpose was to build affordable homes for returning GI’s from the war. Being a veteran himself, this task seemed to be an important one. Jack Hoffman’s name was voted to be the new town name due to his heavy influence and clear dedication to building this community. So, then the town became Hoffman Estates. Not only did F&S build homes around here, but they also built a planned community which consisted of plazas for shopping, office buildings, schools and other buildings that once were a bowling area and a movie theater. Some of the other subdivisions under Jack’s belt are Parcel A, B, C, D and Highlands West. He was also a generous man who donated land and materials that totaled $1,246,000 which was used to build some of the schools in the area. He also donated churches and a family farm, one that he acquired when purchasing the land, which became Hoffman Estate’s first village hall and police department when they were incorporated in September of 1959.
Although parts of nearby neighborhoods were becoming incorporated during the development of this area, the Highlands subdivision had a difficult time being annexed to Hoffman Estates. This was mainly because it was made through the use of a road that was previously annexed to the Village of Schaumburg in July 1958. After several months and legal attempts, the Hoffman Estates village board officially approved the annexation on June 20, and it was recorded as part of the village on July 7, 1960.
Behind the hustle and bustle of the traffic on Golf and Higgins Road, the Highlands maintains a quiet neighborhood. It is nestled in a perfect and convenient location that is close to a wide variety of parks, stores, restaurants, businesses, highways and local attractions like the Streets of Woodfield and Woodfield Mall.

Parcel A
The Parcel A subdivision is located in between Golf and Higgins Road just east of Roselle Road in Hoffman Estates and consists of mainly quaint ranch homes. Originally this area was a rural farming community and this piece of land, and its farm, belonged to Arthur and Dorothy Hammerstein. Arthur had a famous nephew who did Broadway musicals and Dorothy was a silent movie star but enjoyed the quiet rural life very much. After Arthur’s death, Dorothy sold the farm to Sam and Jack Hoffman who were owners of the Father and Son Construction Company, also known as F&S Construction. The plan was to build a new subdivision in Cook County which started out as Parcel A. Towards the end of 1955, the first homeowners began to move into this subdivision. Homes were built on ½ acre lots and sold for $14,500. The interest rate was 4½% and the down payments were as little as $700.
In 1956, the first school called Twinbrook, was opened in Parcel A. As the area grew, the residents voted to incorporate the land to be part of the Village of Hoffman Estates and this charter was issued on September 23, 1959. The newly incorporated subdivision started out as being just under 3 square miles and the population was about 8,000.
Nowadays, Parcel A lies in a unique area that sits close to the border of Hoffman Estates and Schaumburg. Its prime location provides incredibly easy access to restaurants, shopping, and pretty much any kind of convenience you can think of. Expressways are very close and so is Woodfield Mall which is one of the largest shopping destinations in the U.S. It also feeds into sought after Conant High School.
